Image Formats that are supported in ABC-View Manager

The list below sums all formats that are supported in ABC-View Manager. Since version 1.40, some formats are not directly supported but require a plugin. This approach is taken so that 3rd party image format viewers can be used and it also helps to keep the basic download size of ABC-View Manager at handsome size.

Extension

Description
BMP, DIB, RLE Windows Bitmap File. General raster format used by many Windows applications.
EMF, WMF Windows Meta File or Enhanced Meta File. General vector format used by many Windows applications.
JPG, JPEG, JPE, JFIF Joint Graphics exPert Group file. Widely used format for lossy compressed raster images.
TIF, TIFF, FAX Tagged Image File Format. Widely used format for raster images that incorporates multiple compression techniques. Note: some TIF files are not displayed correctly within ABCVM, due to limitations of the embedded raster library.
PNG Portable Network Graphics. Lossles raster format, used for web mostly.
GIF Graphics Interchange Format, owned by Compuserve. Used for web mostly. GIF animations are not supported in ABCVM.
JP2 Jpeg 2000. This format is thought to be the replacement of JPG files in future. It uses wavelet transforms for compression. This format requires a plugin.
AVI Windows Video file. ABCVM shows the thumbnail of the first frame of the AVI file. ABCVM relies on Windows software in order to show this image, which cannot be guaranteed to be 100% stable on all machines. This format requires a plugin.
TTF TrueType font. This format is used for standard TrueType fonts used in Windows. ABCVM will present a thumbnail with a few of the characters and numbers in the font. This format requires a plugin.
DXF Drawing Interchange Format. This vector image format is used to exchange CAD or technical drawings between applications. This format requires a 3rd party plugin that requires registration. Trial version is available (with nag screen and limitations).
ICO Windows Icon.
TGA, VST, WIN, VDA, ICB Targa graphics format
PCX, PCC, SCR ZSoft PCX graphics format
RLA, RPF AliasWavefront RLA format
PSD, PDD Photoshop PSD format
SGI, RGBA, RGB, BW SGI graphics formats
PPM, PGM, PBM Portable Map format
CEL, PIC Autodesk formats
PCD Kodak Photo CD format
CUT DrHalo CUT graphics format
PSP Paintshop Pro format
CRW, THM Canon Raw Format. This format is used by Canon digicams to store the raw photographs.

Meta-data stored in music files and images

ABCVM supports a number of meta-data formats. The meta-data can be accessed by rightclicking on a thumbnail or item and selecting properties. The meta-data appears on the tags tab.

Meta-data formats that are supported:

  • EXIF
Exif is low-level data and settings from the digicam that shot the image. This data is not editable usually. ABCVM can display EXIF fields, and uses some fields for smart operations. For instance, it can change the file date of a file to the EXIF date/time. And ABCVM can rotate images automatically based on the EXIF orientation field.

  • IPTC
IPTC is a format used initially for news services to annotate images. ABCVM can display IPTC information, but does not allow editing yet.

  • CIFF
This Canon proprietary format is used just like EXIF in Canon raw CRW files. ABCVM can display CIFF information, including the thumbnail. ABCVM uses the CIFF thumbnail when browsing.

  • ID3
ID3 is used in MP3 music files to annotate information about artist, album etc. ABCVM can display the ID3 information, but does not support ID3 version 2 yet.

  • GIF comment
The GIF format allows for a comment to be embedded. ABCVM will display this comment.
